Substantial Web Disruption Affects Dozens Online Platforms and Applications
A widespread online outage has impacted many websites and mobile apps globally, with users noting problems accessing the internet due to difficulties at Amazon’s cloud computing system.
The disrupted platforms encompass the social media app Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and Duolingo, in addition to a host of Amazon-owned services including its key e-commerce website and the Ring doorbell company.
Across the United Kingdom, Lloyds bank was impacted as well as its subsidiaries Halifax and Bank of Scotland, and additional accounts of issues accessing the HM Revenue and Customs online portal on the start of the week. Also in the UK, multiple Ring device owners used networks to state their home gadgets were malfunctioning.
Just within Britain, accounts of issues on particular apps ran into the many thousands for each app.
Amazon reported that the outage began in the Atlantic coast of the America at the cloud division, a section that offers crucial internet infrastructure for a host of businesses, who rent out space on Amazon servers. The cloud platform is the biggest global cloud computing platform.
Soon after the start of the day (PDT) in the US (8 in the morning BST), officials reported “increased error rates and delays” for the cloud services in a zone on the east coast of the America. The ripple effect seemed to hit services around the world, with the Downdetector site reporting issues with the identical platforms in different parts of the world.
The outage tracker Thousand Eyes, a platform that monitors web disruptions, further indicated a surge in issues on the start of the week, including several cases situated in the state of Virginia, the location of the AWS US-East-1 zone where the company stated the issues began.
