Marnus Labuschagne Dropped from Australia's ODI Squad to Face India
The Australian selectors have left out Labuschagne from Australia's three-match ODI series versus India, with high-performing Queensland colleague Matt Renshaw getting a unexpected selection.
Performance Issues Lead to Omission
Labuschagne has been omitted from the one-day international side following being dismissed for one in both of his innings during the top-end series against South Africa in August. He has a highest score of 47 in his previous ten ODI innings.
Labuschagne has featured in 68 ODIs and amassed 1,871 runs at an batting average of 34.64, but will now continue to press his claims a Test recall in time for the Ashes starting in Perth on 21 November.
Surprise Inclusion and Team Updates
There have been indications of a return to form with a score of 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw scored a century for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.
The left-hander may to make his white-ball international debut in the forthcoming series against India after previously being selected in an ODI squad in 2022.
Renshaw has played 14 Tests with the last coming in India in 2023 but is also seeking a Test return as Australia seek a fix to their batting top-order problems.
Pace Returns and Fitness News
Fast bowler Mitchell Starc returns for the ODI series against India after being rested since excelling for Australia in the whitewash of West Indies in July.
BBL performer Mitch Owen could make his ODI debut after sustaining a head injury in the build-up to Australia’s last 50-over series against South Africa.
Skipper Pat Cummins remains on the sidelines as he works to regain fitness from a back injury in time to captain Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes in November.
Squad Selection Approach and Fixtures
Australia have named a squad for only the initial two T20 matches against India with the Ashes approaching, although Glenn Maxwell will miss all of the five-match series due to a wrist injury suffered in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will skipper both the ODI and T20 sides after smashing a century in the last match against New Zealand to seal a series clean sweep last week.
“Selectors have announced a squad for the ODI series and initial two matches of the T20 series as there will be rotation through the later stages of the series as individuals prepare for the summer through domestic first-class matches,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will stay as a group as it’s an crucial phase in the preparation for the T20 World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously prepare certain individuals for the Test series ahead.”
Australia’s three-game ODI series against India starts on 19 October in Perth, before the opponents play five T20s from 29 October.
